A common signature for 5 cancers.
A similar “signature” change on DNA due to methylation is discussed, identifying five different cancers: colon, lung, breast, stomach and endometrial. This change is being looked at as a possible “universal signature” for other cancers. The hope is to develop biomarkers for early cancer detection.
The signature changes in gene expression (epigenetic) do not alter the actual DNA code. It results in a difference in what our cellular machinery makes. Think of programming a factory machine with tolerances. Parts that fit more ideally result in a machine that should run longer, faster and more efficient.
